New Orleans

I came into New Orleans on Canal street. It runs right through the French quarter and is very wide. Trolley cars run through the middle. U turns are expected. I also drove past the street my hotel is on because there are different street names to the right and left. Pretty much every name is different. This road also has a casino I lost $20 at.

My hotel room was on the 17th floor, so this is the view I had. As you can see, it was a bit rainy. Thankfully there wasn't any rain either night I was there, but the days were pretty wet. I didn't really complain because it was the first day I've had below 95 in a while. The south is hot.

This is the famous Bourbon street. Within 1 mile there are at least 40 bars and 10 strip clubs. At night, the road is closed to cars and people just walk down the street. They also allow you to walk around with open beer. Some bars even advertised "to go" beer. A few bars had live music but only a couple were classic New Orleans jazz. Also, don't try the New Orleans Ale. It isn't very good.

This is a large Cathedral and nearby park. The statue of Jesus has light shining on it at night to make a really large Jesus shadow.

This is where I had some beignet. Its a local specialty. Its basically a differently shaped funnel cake. They also make you wait a few minutes as the fry up each order fresh.

This is Royal street, which is right next to bourbon street. My hotel was on this road, but it is full on antique shops, so I didn't spend much time here.

Just being on bourbon street at night was an experience worth visiting the city. The feeling of the narrow, active street is something very unique. I still never want to live here.

  3. Nick,
I enjoyed seeing your pictures and reading about your adventures. I hope you get to Seattle and the Bellevue area where Ryan lives. His roommate, Nick, works at Microsoft in Bellevue and they they have great salaries and benefits. The city of Bellevue has lots of the .com companies like Expedia besides Microsoft. Check it out and give Ryan a call. He and Nick rent a house. The weather and hiking there is great. We're going out the end of August. I look forward to seeing your next posting, it looks like you are having a great trip!
